Reader's Annotation:
This book is a true to life story of the author. It is based on the abuse and torture suffered by young David by his mother and how he managed to overcome this obstacle and succeed in life.
It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it." In the end, it is the story of a child's courage to survive. The book doesn't leave the reader empty as we know that the child survived this abuse.
